Born and raised in the Calgary, Alberta area, John spent his early years working a variety of construction jobs while pursuing a Civil Engineering degree at the University of Calgary. After a few years in the concrete industry, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a Combat Engineer, driven by the desire to gain the most experience in the least amount of time. Over the course of a 20-year military career, he served in postings across Canada and deployed twice to Afghanistan. Balancing military service with academic achievement, he completed a Master of Business Administration, a Master of Defence Studies, and earned a couple professional designations in Project Management and Facility Management. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer in the province of Alberta.
An avid outdoor enthusiast, he spends his free time exploring Canada’s backcountry by motorcycle, ice fishing, and tackling the challenges of the 1000km Great Divide Trail, which he is currently working to complete. He lives in Calgary with his spouse and two children.
