Submissions

We are a Toronto-based publisher of military and security-focused fiction and non-fiction works. We’re interested in material that sheds new light on familiar topics, or that changes what we think we know about a topic. We are not restricted to signing only Canadian or Canada-based authors, and will happily consider works by writers who are farther afield.

Our guiding light is that we want to publish the kinds of books that we want to read, so don’t be afraid to give us a try.

We are primarily interested in submissions that are:

  • military fiction (Think everything from Robert Heinlein to Bernard Cornwell)
  • military biographies or memoirs
  • military and national security-related history
  • books on military theory and tactics, modern or historical
  • battlefield guides
  • Military-themed graphic novels
  • guides or references for collectors of militaria, modellers, wargamers and reenactors

Please note: We do not accept submissions of manuscripts that are over 100,000 words in length. We are also not generally interested in acquiring books that have been previously self-published, unless there have been significant changes to the original work that would compel an owner of the original version to buy the new one.

Printers vs Publishers

It’s important to note – we use a traditional publishing model, where money flows from the publisher to the author, not the other way around. There are no fees or costs involved with submitting to us or publishing with us. We receive many queries by authors who are seeking a printer rather than a publisher. A printer is a business that produces physical books – they charge by the copy printed, have no editorial interest in the quality of the material they are printing, and may offer other services (editing, distribution) but do so for a fee. A publisher acquires the rights to publish books from authors based on our evaluation of the strength of the work, edit and design the book in collaboration with the author, hire a printer to produce the physical work, and then market and distribute it. We recoup our costs from the sale of the book and pay the author an agreed upon royalty.

Submission Process

Please only submit work that fits the categories listed above. We do not accept submissions of manuscripts that are over 100,000 words in length. Send a query letter and sample chapters in the body of an email to submissions@doubledagger.ca. We endeavour to respond to all submissions.
