Matt Simpson

Dr. Matt Simpson, Major (Retired), is a married father of four, family physician, and Honorary Colonel. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces at 16 and rose through the ranks from a young reservist to a young Sergeant, before entering medical school at the University of Ottawa and joining the Regular Force. He retired in 2015 after completing nearly 25 years of combined service.

Although highly fictionalized, his debut novel, Before I Left, draws inspiration from his experience as a General Duties Medical Officer deployed with the Role One Medical Contingent on a short Technical Assistance Visit (TAV) to Panjwai, Afghanistan, in 2010. It’s a story about healing and resilience, the weight of duty, the cost of war, and the quiet moments of redemption in between.

He and his wife, both family physicians, now teach in the Department of Family Medicine at Queen’s University. When not writing or seeing patients, he can be found coaching hockey or relaxing at the lake with his family.
